Instructions for caring for Jack Russell dogs

  1. Food: Jack Russell dogs are small breeds, so they do not need an excessive amount of food to survive. We recommend food for small and medium breeds and in a moderate amount that you must regulate yourself since the dog will eat when it feels hungry or by whim or envy and if we get carried away too much, it could have serious obesity, joint or cholesterol problems. We must feed it 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and in addition to the feed we can give it chicken, rabbit or veal, being careful with the bones, chopping them well to prevent them from getting stuck in the intestine, certain legumes such as chickpeas or rice, vegetables are not recommended because dogs do not digest them well, except carrots, although the ideal is always the feed because it has all the nutrients that the dog needs.
  2. Characteristics: These dogs are of a small breed, with a small size of about 30 centimeters, a weight of between 6 and 10 kilograms and short, smooth hair. As for the hair color, we will have it in many colors and combinations of them, such as brown and white. This dog has a long snout, short tail and ears that can be straight or drooping depending on the type of Jack Russell it is.
  3. Interaction: The Jack Russell breed is a hunting breed, therefore it will have great energy and will need 3 daily walks of at least half an hour each, in these walks we can release them in a meadow to run and look for a loose rodent. We recommend keeping them in large houses and never in kennels since it is not their ideal habitat.  When they are at home we should play with them using dog toys such as tethers, ropes and balls. As for other dogs, they are usually well-behaved dogs. But if it is a male there could be a problem with another male dog so be careful.
  4. Health: It is a dog that generally enjoys good health, but we must be careful with certain things:
    1. Regarding hygiene: A bath every three weeks would suffice, we must cut his nails to prevent them from breaking as they are very long and brush his hair 3 times a week to remove the hair that falls out.
    2. As for the health problems that it may have: Monitor the diet because it can have diarrhea from time to time, as for the rest, there is no problem except in advanced ages that could encounter typical problems of small breeds.
    3. Regarding veterinary care: First, have the dog in order with papers, chip and vaccination schedule that must be met, secondly take the dog to regular check-ups twice a year to monitor its health and finally take it to the vet whenever we think you might be sick.

Tips for caring for Jack Russell dogs

  • Disobedience: These dogs have a drawback, which is that when they are puppies they will try to take control as owners of the house, especially if they are male. They will do things like climb on the sofas, be in areas where they do not belong or ask you for more food than the bill. We recommend setting limits from when they are puppies and if necessary take them to a professional dog trainer to teach them behavior patterns and teach them how they should behave.
  • Hunting dogs: The Jack Russell breed, as we said, is a hunting dog by nature, so if you have a farm or a garden, it could be very useful for eliminating rats, voles or mice. Leave the dog loose in the garden and he will do his work for him, yes, prepare to fix all the holes that your dog is going to make with his small excavations of him.
