At Don How’s we like canaries. They are magnificent, elegant, and intelligent birds. That is why today we will talk about a singing breed, the ringed canaries. Its origin dates from the precise moment in which the wild canary was introduced in Spain, between the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th. It is the breed that is most closely related to the wild canary of the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands.

The canary was domesticated for its striking song, and since its introduction to Spain many breeders emerged who dedicated themselves to cultivating it. Probably those first canaries that were bred in captivity had a song similar to those of the current ringing. Despite this, the Spanish Timbered was the last singing breed officially recognized by the World Ornithological Confederation, in 1962. It could be said that it is the oldest and most modern singing breed at the same time.

This closeness to its wild ancestor gives the appearance of our specimen. It is smaller than other breeds, and its plumage is generally green, or green and yellow combining both colors. Although it is also true that these birds can be found completely yellow, white and cinnamon, gray, and other various colors. However, for this type of canary, the color of its plumage is not a determining factor, but how its particular song is. In this article you will learn to recognize this bird more easily, and all the care it requires.

Instructions for ringed canaries

What makes this breed different from others that are also singers, are its technical characteristics?

  1. The characteristics of the song that they can compose with turns should mainly contain slow rhythms that allow as clear an expression as possible. That is why the slow or semi-slow rhythms will be called main tours, with some connotation of somewhat faster rhythms since these, in conjunction with the previous ones, harmonize and contribute to the richness of the song of this bird.
  2. The timbre of the turns they emit, like the tone, can have a wide variety as long as it is not identical to other currently recognized singing breeds.
  3. The intensity of the voice of the songs emitted must be such that they allow a clear hearing of the consonants and vowels that they compose, without becoming a strident sound; but enhance the cheerful musical character of this issue.
  4. The general tone of these specimens must include a wide tonal register, without the need for the canary to specialize in a certain type of tone, unlike other song varieties that currently exist.
  5. Wide and rich in variety melodies, for this reason all kinds of rhythms should be composed, in which the slowest ones will predominate, and when there is a change of rhythm, it should not be very abrupt; In addition to being clearly visible

HOW TO CORRECTLY CHOOSE A RINGER:

  1. Choosing the parents correctly is key for the offspring, since if they are poor singers or reproducers, the offspring will not be very successful in singing.
  2. The males must be kind, strong, docile and sweet in their song. A good male of this canary can be used to breed from four to six years. After this age, their reproduction can falter and so can their offspring.

FEEDING

A good diet is the basis for canaries to be in a perfect state of mind throughout the year, with a good predisposition to singing.

  1. Bird seed is the main and basic food. These seeds can be found in any specialized store, which will give us the most suitable commercial mixtures. You have to make sure that the product you supply us with is as fresh as possible and that the mixture contains a good variety of seeds.
  2. Rape seed is a good complement for birdseed. Four parts of canary seed can be provided together with one of rapeseed.
  3. Perilya is a highly recommended seed, with high protein content, fat, and easy to digest.
  4. Cinnamon is useful for the heat of the reproducers and the fattening of the offspring
  5. Negril just like the hemp seed, too.
  6. Fonio paddy helps prevent covidosis.
  7. Chia is high cost, but high quality. It is a source of protein and fat.
  8. Fruits and vegetables once or twice a week as a food supplement. They especially like juicy apples, pears, peaches, fresh figs, melons… etc. Vegetables must be washed and dried beforehand. We can serve you lettuce, broccoli, spinach, cucumber, Swiss chard…
  9. Breeding paste can be used when our specimens need a quality protein content, for example for the first development of the offspring when they have just been separated from their parents, although it is also recommended to use it for when they are adults during the mounting season. We can find wet and dry pasta. The wet ones have more fat content, and the dry ones are usually convenient to add some moisture to facilitate their digestion. We can moisten them by adding some couscous, sprouts, or grated apple.
  10. Spiraling can be mixed with the breeding paste. It is an alga that is marketed dried and powdered. We can find it cultivated in interior lakes. Its protein content is very high and it is also rich in vitamins or amino acids. It is usually used especially in the breeding season, but it is also good to administer it during the rest of the year.
  11. Grit is a compound of bits of charcoal, shells, or small grains of sand that Tambrands ingest to aid in seed digestion.
  12. Probiotics are cultures of bacteria and yeasts that are installed in the digestive system, favoring the digestion of food and also protect from the development of pathogenic germs

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

It is very important that our canaries molt in large cages or aviaries, and no more than four specimens in one of them. So they can develop to the fullest. Then you can start delimiting the space to a slightly smaller cage if you want to train the ringing in the song. Also for the bird to perform perfectly, it is advisable to locate them in bright areas, and allow them to bathe at least once or twice a week.

Tips for ringed canaries

  1. Select the type of stamped canary that you like. Listen to all the types of songs there are and determine which one you would be most happy to hear at home. Listen to classics, intermediates and discontinuous
  2. Establish contact with breeders who breed this type of specimen, and try to get hold of some of these birds to start. If you don’t have enough space, don’t mix too many.
  3. Be constant to train the canary in its song.
  4. Be patient. When you breed a ringer, it is possible that you can be successful right away, but usually this is not the case, rather you have to work for several years with the animal until you get the desired result.
