We may have once felt lonely, even though we have family and friends. Not having someone special with you to share moments of your life makes you think. But don’t be discouraged, there will always be someone who really cares about you, even if they don’t know how to show it or you don’t know how to see it. In any case, the best company that a human being can have is that of a dog. He is a faithful companion who will always be by your side, no matter what. His only mission will be to simply please you and have a good time with you. Although they have their hobbies and their way of being, they are excellent friends. Not all breeds are the same; you have to know more about them to understand some of their behaviors. In this article we will talk about what a greyhound is like. It is a very spectacular breed and, without a doubt, it will make our lives incredibly happy with its faithful company.

Greyhound

The greyhound is a very popular breed of dog, at least in our country. It is a dog of considerable height. Although his build is slim, he is also a strong dog. It is commonly used to help hunt. His great speed and his instinct for this task make him the best ally. Many hunters only want them for the hunting season and, once the hunting season is over, they abandon them or kill them. This is totally unacceptable and the law should protect this breed in particular and all animals in general.

They are ideal companions and, regardless of whether they are good at hunting, we can enjoy their company for much more important reasons. Therefore, instead of thinking about how to make a profit, you have to know how to take care of a dog. If we are not able to do this well, we will not be able to treat other human beings well either.

Breed Compatibility

If you are one of those people who usually exercise, there is no better dog than the greyhound to accompany you. This does not mean that he does not have his quiet moments, or that he does not like home or is not affectionate. On the contrary, if you are a calm person you will also be very compatible with the greyhound. And most importantly, he is a very noble dog.

So the only question we have to ask ourselves is not if the greyhound is a good companion for us, but if we are a good company for him. Before making this decision, it is advisable to know a little more about this breed, its needs and what it needs from us. Knowing all this, we will be able to make a decision that is good for us, but above all for the dog. It is very important, since it is not enough that we like it. We are responsible for it.

Greyhound Physique

An incredible fact about the greyhound is that it occupies the second position in the list of the fastest animals in the world. The 70 km/hour reached by this breed are only surpassed by the cheetah. They are able to run at these speeds because the greyhound is a very light dog and has a lot of agility.

Apart from the maximum speed they reach, these magnificent specimens can reach great speeds in a very short time, due to their explosiveness.  They are also capable of holding a high pace exceeding five minutes of time, thanks to their lung capacity.

Although it may seem like a weak dog, due to its slender figure, the truth is that it has strong muscles. The weight that a greyhound usually has is 20-25 kilos and its height is between 62 and 70 centimeters. The greyhound’s head is narrow and long, as is the snout. It has round eyes and medium size. Thanks to the shape of the back, which is arched, they make your spine very flexible.

A great ability of the greyhound is that, even running at maximum speed, they make almost no noise and you can’t hear them coming. They are also very patient and know how to identify the moment for action. That is why they are the best to go hunting.  Although, as we have pointed out before, that they know how to hunt is one more anecdote, since it is a very valuable breed for other reasons.

Rest of the Greyhounds

Rest is a very important aspect for this breed. You must have a very comfortable bed in which you sleep peacefully. It is important that the mattress or the base where you sleep is soft and with a certain thickness. Failure to do so could lead to some bone pain and later bone problems. As we have said before, this breed of dog likes to sleep and rest a lot. The more comfortable their bed is, the happier they will be.

Instructions for a Greyhound

It is important from the puppy stage that our greyhound socializes with the outside world, both with other dogs and with other people. If we don’t, it will be a reserved animal and it will be difficult for it to interact with others.

  1. The greyhound is a very independent, affectionate and intelligent dog. They are also usually somewhat shy, so it is important that they have relationships, not only with family members. They may be a little distant with us at first, but as soon as they trust us they will be very affectionate and sensitive companions.
  2. The greyhound, to maintain the physical activity it needs, must go out for a walk, more or less, three times a day. These walks are advisable to do in an area enabled for it, where they can run freely. They need at least five minutes of free running. In a large area, where it is conducive to running, we will remove the leash and let the show begin.  Although it is a wide area, this terrain must be controlled because, being so fast, in a moment they are out of our vision and no matter what we call them, they are running freely.
  3. Also the game of throwing the ball and having him go for it is very entertaining, both for us and for them. And, in turn, it helps the greyhound get the exercise it needs.  If our greyhound is nervous at home, it means that he must go out.
  4. An amusing curiosity is that greyhounds when they run seem to be laughing, because of the shape of their mouths. An aggressive greyhound is almost impossible to see. It is a very affectionate and peaceful breed. We have to know that they also like to sleep, even too much. They are able to sleep 3/4 of a day in some cases.

What do you need for a Greyhound?

Greyhounds have a life expectancy that ranges between 12 and 15 years. To reach this age they must be well cared for and fed. Before adopting or buying an animal, we must make sure that we are capable of taking care of it and guaranteeing it a healthy life.

  •  As it is a spectacular breed, they do not lack people who take advantage of their exceptional conditions. Therefore, by adopting a greyhound, we are doing you a favor and will help you overcome the experiences suffered. There are people who only see them as a source of money and only care about making money with them. When they finish, they leave them. If we know of any of these practices, we must report it to a protector or the police. It is one of the most mistreated breeds in the country.
  •  Greyhounds do not do well in extreme temperatures, so care must be taken in seasons such as summer or winter. On excessively cold days, a great solution is to buy, at a specialized pet store, a coat that adapts well to your body and allows you to move easily. And a raincoat for rainy days.
  •  In summer we must pay special attention to our partner, since they are susceptible to going through some heat stroke. For this reason, we will continually fill the trough. If we go for a walk, we will take water with us to give him whenever he is thirsty. Also wet them from time to time, if it is very hot. It is a good measure to choose the hours when it is less hot for these walks.

Tips for a Greyhound

If we still do not have a greyhound and have decided to buy one, it is advisable to check the kennels or animal shelters first. Adoption is a great alternative, since there are of all ages. With this action, you will save a dog and give it a home. If the dogs are already faithful, those that come from a kennel or have been abandoned are even more so. They are dogs that would give their lives for you.

In the education of the greyhound, if we have any questions, we can consult our veterinarian. Whether for food, growth, health or the vaccines you need. Do not keep any doubts or concerns, since the most normal thing is to ask to find out.

If we have children at home from an early age, it is important to be careful so that they do not play wildly with our dog. It is important to let them know that they should treat you gently and lovingly.
