Scabies is a skin disease that is quite common in some animals such as dogs, scabies is very unpleasant for our animal since it will have a bad time and will spend the day scratching.

As dogs are habitual scratchers, sometimes our animal could be infected with scabies and we will not have realized it, scabies is an infection that if treated in time is somewhat temporary but if it is left too long it could cause problems of long-term health to your animal such as low defenses, permanent hair loss in that area or simply getting wounds from scratching.

A good detection of scabies is crucial for its correct treatment, for this reason we must know well what scabies in dogs is like, we are going to explain it to you in detail and step by step.

What do you need for mange in dogs?

  • To detect scabies
    • Observation capacity.
    • Read these instructions carefully.
  • To cure scabies:
    • Neutral PH soap without toxic components.
    • Olive oil.
    • Latex gloves.

Instructions for handling dogs

  1. Appearance: When scabies is beginning to appear, it is practically undetectable; scabies is caused by a microscopic mite and usually attacks the ears and other parts of the body, with different mites being the ones that cause the disease depending on the area.  As the dog progresses, it will begin to scratch and if we look closely at the area, a small reddish color can be detected in the affected area.
  2. How to detect scabies: We will be able to know if an animal has scabies by observing it very carefully, in the first place we will see that it scratches a specific area all day, if we observe the area well several things can happen in case of scabies: First of all we will have fall of the animal’s fur in the area, secondly in serious cases it will have the area swollen and red from so much scratching. If we look at the area and in addition to the irritation we see the reddish color that we have seen before, it is almost certainly scabies.
  3. Cure scabies: Once we have detected scabies, we can proceed to its treatment and cure, firstly take the animal immediately to the vet to examine it properly and give it a treatment, sometimes scabies can be confused with a simple irritation by itching so that’s why you should always go. The vet usually prescribes some pills and a special neutral soap for dogs, which does not have toxic components and we must use to bathe the dog. To do this we will put on latex gloves (humans can also get scabies) and bathe the dog by applying the soap to the area and rinsing once a week. In about a month and a half the dog should be cured. If you want to try natural remedies, what works best is olive oil, since in addition to not being toxic to the animal, it is capable of helping to nourish the skin and regenerate it as soon as possible.

Tips for mange in dogs

  • Prevention: Scabies is usually spread by some causes that are completely avoidable if we know how to properly care for the animal.
    • Cleaning at home: Mites live in dust, so if your home is always dirty and unclean, it could favor the spread of scabies to the dog. Clean the dust often and pass the vacuum cleaner since with the rag you only change places.
    • Dog food: When the dog has a good diet, it usually has an effective defense mechanism that is capable of eliminating the mite before it does anything, on the other hand, dogs that do not eat well are more prone to infection. Feed your dog food for its breed and size accompanied by meat and vegetables so that it has a balanced diet, also make sure that it always has water available.
    • Cleaning the dog: Many times we take the dog for a walk and it rolls in mud, plays and ultimately gets stained, although bathing the dog too much can be bad for health if a bath is recommended every three weeks at least to clean all the dirt. Dirt it might have.
  • Be very careful with medicinal plants and creams: Although we use some creams to treat skin diseases, this should not be done with dogs, the main reason is that dogs instinctively tend to lick their bodies, for which they could get intoxicated For example, foods such as avocado, which are highly recommended for human skin, are toxic to the dog when they are ingested, as is the case with all skin creams and plants with aloe Vera if they are ingested, so opt for avocado oil. Olive oil and for the treatment soap and I’m sure you’ll be fine.
