Dog adoption is the most humane and wonderful way to give a domestic canine a home. Buying pets, when we adopt a dog we are giving the opportunity to have a healthy life and a family to someone who has nothing and was possibly discarded on the streets.

We are giving someone a chance to have a good life. However, adopting dogs also has its negative side, especially for health reasons. Stray dogs are constantly in contact with diseases, infections and dirt, so when we adopt a dog we have to take care that before bringing it home permanently, it has its vaccinations in order.

We must also prepare the house to receive our new dog and above all prepare our pets to receive it in case we have other animals living in our house. That’s why I want to teach you how to properly adopt dogs. This way you will not only be able to perform one of the most beautiful and heroic acts of love towards an animal, but you will also be able to give your dog the environment that he needs to have a good quality of life and real love with. You.

What do you need to adopt dogs?

Instructions for adopting dogs

  1. Do not be guided by the myth of age. The negative myth has long been promoted that adult dogs cannot adjust to new homes, new pets, or be adopted. This is a lie.  Although dogs develop their own character, age is not a limitation for the dog to be adopted, loved, and taken into a home; you just have to know how to treat it and how to adapt it.
  2. Prepare a unique place for your new dog. Whether you have children or other animals in your home, to prevent the spread of diseases that your dog may bring, we recommend that your dog has a place to stay while you prepare him to take him to the vet, do the corresponding tests to find out if he is healthy, and of course bathe him.
  3. In the case of street dogs, it can be a bit difficult to adapt them to an environment inside the house, this is because dogs develop a character in the environment they have on the streets. If your dog has a very strong character, you will have to gradually adapt it to living in the house. If you want your dog to adapt with other animals, you must accustom him little by little.
  4. Give your dog plenty of attention. If your dog was stray or abandoned, you will have to take care of him and give him attention in order to alleviate the traumas that he has formed in his past life. Remember that once you adopt a dog you are giving it a new life and therefore you have to give it a healthy environment and friendly treatment. If your dog is very shy, I recommend you start the contact little by little.
  5. Before petting him always show him your hand and let him smell you. We do this so that the dog feels that we are going to hit it and we are a threat. By allowing our hand to smell, the dog realizes that he can trust us if we want to pet him.
  6. Every day give your dog at least 15 minutes of attention and pampering while he is adjusting to the house. This way we will prevent him from developing a melancholy or very fearful character. If your dog was a stray or very shy, you will have to gradually adapt him to going for a walk on a leash. To avoid mishaps in the parks with other dogs, I recommend you start walking your dog from the first month of being home. This way your dog will adapt to going out and living with other dogs.
  7. Don’t forget to provide your dog with fresh, clean water every day. Especially if your dog is an adult, the water should not be lukewarm and should be changed frequently.  This is because adult dogs don’t like to drink warm water, and if they don’t drink water they can become dehydrated.
  8. You should also provide food according to the needs of the dog, if it is a puppy, give it puppy food, if it is an adult, and give it adult food. Remember to take your dog for a veterinary check-up at least once every three months. This way we can prevent the spread of diseases and detect if the dog has any.

Tips for adopting dogs

  • Remember that you should spend quality time with your pet; this does not mean that you leave behind other activities in your life or you’re other pets, but that you give each one the appropriate time according to their needs.
