Do you have a miniature pinscher dog? Are you considering getting this type of dog?  Perhaps you should learn a little more about this breed and its characteristics to know if it is the type of dog that suits you and how to take care of it correctly.

Miniature Pinschers are, as their name suggests, small in size, so they are ideal if you live in a small apartment, but they are very dynamic dogs, who like activity and exploration, and are also very determined ( as soon as they decide something it is difficult to make them change their minds).

If you want to know a little more about the characteristics of this breed and how to care for a miniature pinscher, keep reading this article where we will give you all the information you need to know if this type of dog is the one that best suits you and how you can make it grow healthy, strong and happy.

What are miniature pinschers like?

Physical characteristics between a Miniature Pinscher and a Doberman pinscher are very similar, discounting size. And although we may believe that these two races are related, this is not the case. The Mini Pinscher is a breed that appeared first, while the Doberman is a more recent breed, and neither share ancestors.

Despite not being related, the Miniature Pinscher seems to have been a reduction of a Doberman, so that the physical characteristics are almost identical. The Miniature Pinscher usually weighs between 4 and 6 kg and its hair is brown and black.

Its legs are thin, and the head is quite elongated and a bit flat.

Miniature Pinscher Personality

Miniature Pinschers are small in size, but they have a very strong personality. It is a very active breed, fast, agile, intelligent and energetic. Remember that it is a hunting breed, so its instincts will make it chase, search and catch animals smaller than it, such as mice and rabbits (so if you have some of these animals at home, be very careful with your dog).

Being a hunting dog, the Miniature Pinscher tends to be independent and make its own decisions, so it can be difficult to teach it, since it will be difficult for it to listen to what you say if it is not interested.

Apart from its hunting attitude, the Miniature Pinscher is also a sweet and affectionate dog and can adapt to living in small spaces as long as it has a good dose of daily exercise.

Training a miniature pinscher

Training a miniature pinscher as soon as possible becomes essential, since being a fast, agile, intelligent and curious hunting dog, it can escape very easily. You should start training him from a very young age, even if it seems that he doesn’t pay attention to you and that he only wants to play, you should continue with the training, since it is the only way to ensure that he is obedient when he is older.

It is also advisable to train your Miniature Pinscher to moderate his behavior, since these dogs can develop an aggressive behavior and are not afraid of facing dogs much larger than him in size, so he could be badly injured if he provokes fights. Or it could even harm another dog.

It is a very intelligent dog, so you will be able to teach it a wide variety of behaviors and tricks, but it is a dog that does not maintain its attention for a long time, so training periods must be intense but of short duration.

You can encourage and reward him when your dog obeys your commands, it is the best way to learn, never use physical punishment with your dog, however stubborn it may be.

It is also convenient that you get them used to children since they are puppies, because if not, they can be surly and very reluctant in front of them, much worse when they are an adult miniature pinscher.

Feeding a miniature pinscher

Although the miniature pinscher is very small, it is a dog that gets fat easily, so it is not uncommon to see overweight pinschers on the street. You should feed the amount of food your vet has recommended based on your pinscher’s age and medical history.

You should always give him a feed that fully nourishes him, give him quality food, and remember that cheaper feed may not be good for your dog, although the same goes for expensive feed. Just look at the nutritional contribution. Feed him twice a day and keep the water bowl always full.

Bathing a miniature pinscher

Despite what is believed, dogs in their care should not be bathed very often, since they have a layer on their skin that protects them from parasites, etc.

You can bathe your Miniature Pinscher once a month using a specific shampoo for his coat.  But you can brush him frequently so he doesn’t shed so much hair around the house.

It is also important that you keep your nails neatly trimmed and filed. If you don’t know how to do it, go to the vet.

Now you know how to take care of a Miniature Pinscher, so train it and take good care of it so that you are happy.
