Nowadays, it is very fashionable to have a hamster as a pet. Teenagers, more than anything, are attracted to these little critters because they are easy to care for and very inexpensive to feed. In addition, although sometimes it may not seem like it, the hamster is an affectionate, kind and friendly little animal. If you already have a hamster as a pet, here we will tell you how you can take care of it and that it may live with you for many years.

Instructions for caring for a hamster

  1. If you don’t have a hamster yet and you want to buy one, you should look for one between 4 and 7 weeks old, since it is the right age to start taming There are two types of hamsters: the golden and the dwarf. The gold can be found in different colors and skin variations, while the dwarf comes in a few colors. The bad thing about dwarf hamsters is that they are very difficult to tame, while golden hamsters are quite docile.
  2. When you bring him home, try to place his cage in a place with little draft and direct sunlight. Place it in a place where you pass often, in this way he will not feel abandoned.
  3. You must put a layer of pine shavings on the floor of the cage; this allows absorption and is not toxic. Change it periodically.
  4. Make sure that the water you put on it does not touch the wood shavings; if it gets too wet it can decompose and harm your little animal.
  5. Put toys in their cage, such as long tubes where they can pass, metal wheels, etc.  for running. They love to be constantly active, and play as long as they can.
  6. Make a little house out of cardboard or other material for your hamster to sleep in.  Make sure that the house has a door; he will know that he must enter and will fill his bedroom with shavings.
  7. As for food, you should give him special balanced food for hamsters, and you can also give him fruits and vegetables in not so large portions, but every day. They love fruits and vegetables!
  8. You should wash your cage at least once a week with water and disinfectant. For this, your hamster has to be in another place so that it does not come into contact with the disinfectant and get sick.
  9. Do not bathe him, they clean themselves, if you feel a bad smell, it is probably not due to him, but if the cage may be dirty.
