Dogs of the “poodle” breed are those friendly and restless puppies with curly hair. There are four varieties that have to do with size, from largest to smallest: large, medium, dwarf and toys. Other varieties have also emerged lately, such as the mini Toy or micro Toy.

They are dogs of European origin, the standard poodle was a dog used in hunting aquatic prey, and the other three varieties were obtained by crossing with other breeds. These were once the dogs of the aristocracy. The smallest are ideal pets to accompany people in large or small spaces. They are also the most seen dogs in circuses.

The colors are white, brown, black, cream, silver, blue, etc. All with a single even color throughout the body.

Their hair is curly, it does not change, so they are recommended for people with allergies or who do not like hair in the environment. Its tail is straight, oval and black eyes, ears are long and hang close to the head.

They are intelligent, very agile, docile and easy to train, so it is very common to see them working in circuses.

They can be kept with natural hair or cut evenly or show-style when desired.

We will explain how to take care of a poodle in any of its varieties to keep it healthy, clean and happy at home.

  • Brush, dog shampoo.

Instructions for caring for a poodle

  1. The poodle in any of its sizes and colors is a dog that gets along very well with people and especially with children.
  2. The officially recognized sizes and varieties differ depending on the association that makes it, for example there is the classification according to the International Iconological Federation in large, medium, dwarf and Toys. Instead, the American Kennel Club classifies as: Standard, Miniature, and Toy.
  3. The giant or large is surely the original breed from which the smaller ones were obtained. The giant poodle has a height at the withers that varies between 45 and 60 cm. The medium or standard size has a height that varies between 30 and 45 cm, the dwarf or miniature has a variable height between 28 cm and 30 cm and, finally, the smallest size called Toy does not exceed 28 cm at the withers.
  4. It is an intelligent dog, very restless and easy to train due to its docility. They fit all kinds of places from the tiny to the standard.
  5. They are hyperactive, very curious and playful. Like any puppy, it will try to bite everything it finds in its path, so it is very convenient that you buy appropriate toys for dogs. There are toys made of different materials, some of them include ideal vitamin supplements to accompany their growth. Educate him from a young age so that you don’t have problems. If you teach him which objects he can bite, you won’t be taking your things or those of your family.
  6. Teach him from a young age not to relieve him anywhere. You can achieve this considering that if he is 2 months old his bladder will fill in approximately 3 hours, if he is 3 months old every 4 hours, if he is 4 months old every 5 hours. As he learns quickly, do not stop taking him before he wants to urinate in the area indicated for this. The same happens with his intestines, so it is a matter of controlling the schedules and taking him to relieve himself in an orderly manner. If you have a garden, always take it to the same place or if you live in an apartment, place some sheets of newspaper in the place you designate for this.
  7. The care, veterinary control and good nutrition of the poodle can make them live up to fifteen years.
  8. Food should be nutritious and of good quality. The vet will tell you what food is best for you to do it correctly as a puppy.
  9. As the poodle’s coatis abundant, well curly and elastic, it requires daily care. They do not require much care, but they do need to be done daily so that their fur stays healthy and clean.
  10. The poodle’s hair can be cut very short leaving the head, base of the legs and tail with fur. This must be done very carefully and by specialists.
  11. The bath with dog shampoo indicated especially for poodles should be done at least once a month, and then it is maintained with daily brushing. If you have a show poodle you should keep its hair in a dog groomer.
  12. Observe and take care of the inside of your poodle’s ears every day, if you notice any changes, redness or if you see that he turns his head when walking, he may have an ear infection so you should take him to the vet.
  13. The poodle is a dog that needs company, so it is not convenient to leave it alone for a long time. He loves to run, look for objects and brings them, they like to swim. The smaller poodles are more mobile than the larger varieties.
  14. It does not require very long walks since they are constantly moving dogs, but it is good to do it daily. Twice a day will be enough to keep them healthy, to socialize them and make them more relaxed.
  15. They must be socialized from a young age so that in adulthood they are not hostile to strangers, small children or other pets. This is achieved by taking him for a walk, letting him know the outside world, especially if you have him in an apartment and if few people live with him.
  16. Take your poodle to the vet at least once a month when he is a puppy, then you can space out the visit period, follow his advice, comply with the vaccination program, keep him clean, with short nails and give him a balanced diet. All this will make you look strong, healthy and with healthy and shiny hair.
