A cat is a domestic animal classified within the felines which is widely used as a pet in homes around the world. A cat is usually a calm animal and does not require too much work to take care of it.

Cats can be very good and faithful animals, therefore it is ideal for people who do not seek excessive concern for the care of animals. However, cats are somewhat rebellious in nature; therefore certain things must be taken into account. Things for their correct education.

Educating a cat is essential since an ill-mannered cat can do various pranks such as running away, eating your other pets such as hamsters, doing its business around the house or scratching furniture.

The article that I bring you today is going to help you to correctly educate a cat, which will be explained step by step as always.

What do you need to educate a cat?

  • To cat
  • Whistle
  • A box and sand.
  • Wool
  • Cat food.
  • To trainer.
  • Some authority.

Instructions for training a cat

  1. Prevent him from going to the house: This is one of the most common problems in people who have a cat, since cat urine has a very strong smell and it can take up to years to go away, which makes it essential to prevent it from doing its business at home. First of all we need to prepare a box with sand as a urinal for your cat, now we have to make the cat associate the box with the place to relieve itself. The best option to be able to do this is to take your cat after eating and put him in the box, at first it will be inevitable that he will pee and poop at home but in the end he will learn it. If he pees and poops at home we must punish him, to punish him without using violence we will simply withdraw our attention so that he understands that doing the business outside the box entails punishment. When he relieves himself inside we will reward him with a caress or with delicious food for positive reinforcement.
  2. Avoid scratching the furniture: Cats have large claws and therefore like to play and scratch all the objects and furniture in the house. Normally this occurs because he needs to scratch something because of his hunting instinct from him or because he is bored, the best way is to provide him with a toy that he can scratch and play with the typical ball of wool. If he starts scratching the furniture we must teach him that it is not done like that, the best way is to get a whistle since that sound will bother him a lot, we must whistle when he scratches the furniture so that he gets scared and stops doing it.
  3. Avoid other bad habits: The cat may have other bad habits, such as trying to attack other pets, running away, or even attacking you. Every time he does something wrong we must withdraw our attention from the cat and whistle with the whistle, so the cat will associate that it should not be done. If he does something good we should reward him with cat food (the one he likes the most) and with caresses and pampering.  If you have hamsters, put the cage out of the reach of the cat since by instinct it has to attack them yes or yes, also make sure that the cat cannot jump out the window or escape to the patio.
  4. Professional: If you want your cat to be the most obedient, you can choose to take it to a trainer. Just as there are dog trainers, there are also cat trainers which have a similar modus operandi. They will teach him obedience and they will even teach him tricks like jumping or sitting, follow his instructions from him to the letter and do the exercises he tells you. Also make sure you take the cat when it is still a puppy, otherwise it will be impossible to tame it.

Tips for training a cat

  • Castration: It is proven that male cats that are neutered will have a much better behavior than non-neutered cats. Although I am personally against this measure, you can choose to castrate your cat or not according to your personal choice. Some advantages of castration are that the cat will stop urinating around the house and that it will escape less, since before it mainly escaped when the females are in heat. However, I tell you that with a good education you can achieve good results and avoid castration.
  • Respect their space: The cat is not like the dog, what I mean is that cats do not need as much attention and care as dogs. First of all, it is not necessary to take them out for a walk, secondly they do not need or want you to be on top of them all the time and finally they will not need as much pampering and attention as dogs since they are quite lonely.
