The dog is man’s best friend, as they say, although humans are not always the best friends of dogs. Of course, if you have a dog, you want him to have a healthy existence and you will feed him the best you can.

Traditionally, dogs have been given all kinds of scraps from meals, and apparently, they’ve lived just fine. However, the dog is not human and its digestive system and physiology are different, which means that many foods that we eat do not feel good to canines.

You might be surprised by the number of foods that are not suitable for dogs, to the point that they can cause serious illness and even death. And in other cases, perhaps they can eat them, but in very small amounts, minimal compared to the portions that we humans can take.

For this reason, we are going to give you a very interesting list of what are the toxic foods for dogs.

The chocolate.

This is a prohibited product for dogs, it does not matter how it is presented, in tablets, chocolates or mixed with milk, etc. Theo bromine present in chocolate is a toxin for dogs, although not for humans. Even if they seem to love it, you should not give it to them. It can cause seizures, a racing heart, diarrhea and vomiting, and even death.

Garlic and onion.

These two plants that are used so much in the kitchen contain sulfides, which can cause anemia and kidney failure in dogs. A symptom that you have eaten onion or garlic is reddish or orange colored urine. Some feeds contain them, although in minute quantities, but it is necessary to avoid eating them raw, cooked or powdered.

Dairy products.

Dogs are intolerant to lactose in milk and its derivatives. Human beings have an enzyme that allows them to digest lactose, but this enzyme disappears in dogs after a few months of life. However, natural yogurt, which does not have lactose, does suit them very well. But not the cheeses, because the shortage of lactose will depend on the greater or lesser maturation, so it is better not to give them any cheese.

Potatoes, tomatoes and avocados.

In the human diet, we keep hearing the recommendation to eat vegetables every day.  However, our canine friends will be very affected if they eat these vegetables, neither raw nor cooked, because they will suffer digestive, urinary, and respiratory problems, and they can even cause a coma.

Grapes and Raisins.

Although the scientific reasons are not known, but a few grapes are enough for your dog to develop serious kidney failure, which could even cause death. Obviously, don’t give him raisins or other grape derivatives either.

Fruits: apples, plums, peaches, persimmons…

The flesh of the fruits, these and many others, in general, does not harm dogs, on the contrary, it must be included in their diet, but the bone or the pips or seeds that are inside are poisonous. The problem is that they contain small doses of cyanide, which, although humans can tolerate if we take a nugget, is lethal for dogs. If poisoned, you may experience symptoms such as hyperventilation, seizures, and breathing problems.

The liver.

This viscera can be included in your dog’s food, but in very small amounts and never daily, and it is better to provide it cooked rather than raw. The liver contains large doses of vitamin A, in an amount that is always excessive for the dog unless it is in small pieces.  Excess vitamin A will cause anorexia, bone deformation and even death if the intake is too high.

Bones.

What an image more typical than that of a dog gnawing on a bone. Actually, the bones that dogs can safely eat are white or milky bones, such as chicken carcasses, wings and thighs, pork ribs, or beef knee. And it is very important that they are never cooked, always raw, otherwise they can splinter and stick in the throat, stomach and intestines, which would obviously be very serious.

Alcohol.

Many hooligans have been done mistreating a dog by giving him an alcoholic beverage to drink, but remember that dogs do not tolerate alcohol, because in a medium dose it can cause him to go into a coma or die.

Fish.

Yes, you can feed them with fish, raw or cooked, but if it is raw, freeze it beforehand for three days to avoid parasites. Of course, do not give them the big bones so that they do not stick in their stomach.

Salt and sugar.

They are both, and also sweeteners like xylitol, very harmful to your health.

Raw eggs

Give your dog an egg, but always cooked, and always without the shell, as this could cause salmonellosis.

Walnuts.

They are toxic because they have a lot of phosphorus, which is not good for your dog at all.

Swiss chard and spinach.

They contain oxalic acid, very harmful to canine health. Prohibited.

Other toxic foods.

Likewise, you should not give your dog as food, neither mushrooms nor mushrooms, nor coffee or tea, nor sweets nor candies, nor yeast or dough that carries it, nor rotten or spoiled food, nor fats or very fatty foods, that you do have to eat them, but in moderate amounts.
