Vertebrate animals are all species of animals that have a defined backbone within them and therefore also have a kind of skeleton that makes them have good protection in their body.

Vertebrate animals are the most evolved subspecies of animals of all those that exist, since the development of the spine allows things like running, jumping or moving fast, something that would be impossible if we were not vertebrates.

Within the vertebrates, we have 5 subspecies that, in ascending order of evolution, are the following.

  • The fish.
  • The amphibians.
  • The reptiles.
  • The birds.
  • The mammals.

These animals have great differences between them if we go from one subspecies to another, and there are also great differences between animals of the same subspecies, which is why it is necessary to study them thoroughly so as not to get confused when classifying them.

The first thing is to explain a little what each subspecies is, that’s why, from doncomos.com we are going to explain in detail which animals have backbones

What do you need:

  • A little knowledge of flora and fauna.
  • Observation capacity to know which the vertebrate animals are.

Instructions

  1. The fish:  We are going to explain all the species of mammals little by little, doing it in an orderly manner starting with the least evolved species to the most evolved, starting with the fish. Fish are the least evolved vertebrates, which always live in aquatic environments breathing through gills, having a primitive skeleton of spines and having many variations between some species of fish and others. For example, there are large differences in size between some small fish and great white sharks. Fish are usually carnivorous or herbivorous, having small fish that feed on plankton or other invertebrates and others such as sharks. That they are carnivores. Reproduction is sexual, they are oviparous and with few exceptions, the eggs are fertilized externally.
  2. The amphibians: We continue with the series with the second least evolved species of vertebrates of all, that is, the amphibians. Amphibians live in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, always needing to live in the water in some way. They have sexual reproduction, external fertilization and are oviparous. Within the most famous amphibian species, we have frogs, toads and newts, without forgetting also the famous salamanders among others. Reptiles are not usually very large and have the main distinctive feature is the transformation they undergo when they go from the larval stage to the adult stage. They have respiration in the larval state through gills and in the adult state through the skin (cutaneous) and through the lungs.
  3. Reptiles: Now we are going to explain the next type of vertebrate in order of evolution, which are the reptiles. Reptiles live on land, although they like aquatic environments but do not need water. Reptiles are still oviparous (with some exceptions that are viviparous), but they have fertilization within the mother (internal).  Reptiles are very different from each other, with great differences, for example, between snakes, which have no legs, and crocodiles, which are large predators and have huge teeth. We also have lizards, chameleons and small lizards as reptile species. Reptiles usually already breathe through lungs, also having hard skin.
  4. Birds: We are going to continue talking about vertebrates, being the next subtype of species to explain the well-known birds. Birds live both on land and in the air, some being able to fly. The birds have sexual reproduction with internal fertilization but they are normally oviparous, sometimes their body is covered with feathers and they already have a heart with 4 cavities. If I had to give examples I would say ducks, pigeons, ostriches, geese…
  5. Mammals: Finally we go with the most evolved vertebrate animals of all, that is, mammals. The mammalian name comes from the fact that the young, when they are small, suck from their mother’s breasts. Except for the platypus, they are viviparous, that is, they are born from the mother’s womb. Mammals live in all habitats, with many aquatic mammals such as killer whales, whales and dolphins. Breathing is through the lungs, the heart has 4 chambers and there are variations between some species and others. Within the mammals would be the dolphins, the tigers, the dogs, the cats, the rabbits and of course the human being.

Tips

  • Prochordates: These animals are found in between vertebrates and invertebrates.  These animals have a kind of primitive backbone (notochord), but it is not defined as in vertebrates. As an example I could highlight the cephalochordates.
