Do you like birds and can’t have them? Or have you just been given a bird and you don’t know how to feed it? First of all, you must know what species it belongs to and if it is an animal of cold, warm or temperate climate and thus is able to know what the birds eat  and start taking care of the ones you have.

Each species of bird has a different diet, so you should be attentive and read about eating habits or even the habitat in which they live and thus be able to feed them optimally, they are very beautiful but they also have their special care.

Many are carnivorous because they eat other animals besides birds of their species; others are herbivores because they feed on different plants, fruits or berries and a group that is omnivorous that can unify the part that eats meat with that which feeds on seedsleaves and fruits.

Do you think it is difficult to feed a bird? It is not so much if you ask an expert, read books and articles about them in addition to the type of food that is usually different for each species depending on the one you have in the cage as your pet.

What do you need:

  • The birds usually feed on wormsspiders, rodents, berries, and nuts, among many others.
  • Some birds tend to discard foods that they normally eat if they are too ripe or difficult to eat.
  • They usually eat fruits with a slightly hard crust, thanks to their curved or thin and fine beak.
  • The food depends on the type of bird, in addition to the habitat where it is located and the climate that characterizes it.
  •  Insects are usually a nuisance for birds that often seek to carry their young.
  • Scavengers are the only birds that eat the meat of other dead animals.
  • During migrations, some species must adapt to the habitat, the environment that surrounds them and the type of food they usually get.
  • They generally live in flocks, although they usually live as a couple and take care of their young by feeding them until they leave the nest.
  • Learn about the signals of each species when they do not like a certain food.

Instructions

Do you know what a bird is? First of all, you should know that it is a vertebrate animal because it has a complete skeleton, and they can also fly with a variety of ways of feeding, changing their way of life by adapting to the environment that surrounds them.

Those that feed on meat usually look for their prey from the air, launching themselves with incredible force and speed to end up catching their prey without letting it escape while those that usually eat berries, different fruits, plant nectar among many other things they are herbivores.

Despite having different eating habits, one particularity that unifies them is the shape of their beak, since it takes the form to benefit the type of food that the bird adapts for itself, in addition to swallowing food without chewing due to the lack of teeth in their spikes.

What do birds eat:

  1. You must bear in mind that despite not being carnivorous, a bird in captivity must have different types of food in addition to a wide variety so that they do not get bored, stop eating and have to deal with a bird that can get sick and die.
  2. Just like people, birds must take food with nutrients, vitamins, and they must also be healthy so as not to make them fat and present different problems with some disease. Remember that their bodies are small depending on the species.
  3. You can give them seeds that contain some fat, as long as it is not in excess or you abuse it so as not to overfeed them too much. In addition, this type of seed provides energy and vitality to the bird.
  4. Remember to feed them with foods that provide them with a good dose of vitamins and minerals, as well as some fruit or vegetables. Lettuce can be very strong for them since in their digestive system it can generate gases and die.
  5. In a pet store you can ask an expert about birds what kind of food you can give them, depending on whether they are canaries or another species, although most will tell you that canary grass, corn kernels and sunflower seeds are the best to feed them, but they have a lot of fat.
  6. On the other hand, in their daily diet you must be careful to include vitamins that you can use based on granules that you include in their food so that they can grow healthy, with vitality and full of energy to sing and fly.
  7. Never separate a couple, since they quickly get used to friendships and by moving them away, you can cause one or both of them to stop feeding and die without you realizing that it was due to separating them from their partners.
  8. The water that you put in them must be changed every day since they usually dirty it when they feed, and it must be fresh and without any type of sweetener or chemical, if you can remove the chlorine much better or give it water from a deep well.
  9. Each species or each bird is different, and they also adopt eating habits that have nothing to do with their way of being and even more so when they are in captivity, so don’t be surprised when they reject what you put on them, you should look for other food alternatives.
  10. Do not overfeed them, always place a small fruit, that when you see it pecked, take it out of the cage and discard it many times it is better to give them fresh and healthy food that does not rot; you shouldn’t let them feed on things like that.
  11. Animals that are scavengers usually eat others that are already dead and even decomposing, becoming stronger since this type of meat provides them with antibodies against any type of disease.
  12. Many species of birds that are scavengers must wait for others to feed before they can do so because the beak is not very strong or they do not have enough energy to open them with an example of this, the ravens.
  13. Both carnivorous birds and scavengers tend to feed until they are full, often being easy prey for other predators that usually go out in search of food and take advantage when they have finished feeding.
  14. Do not put large birds with small ones, it is better each one separately so you will feed them efficiently and you will not have to worry about the larger ones wanting to eat or kill the smaller ones.
  15. Some birds tend to like fish and their derivatives, so they usually live near beaches and coasts viewing the fish from the air and diving into the water to feed on them, quite a spectacle to see them eat.

Tips

  • Being able to fly, birds observe from the air many of the foods that attract their attention to eat, so it is good that you vary the menu so that they do not get bored and stop eating, apart from the fact that they like to participate in the search of your food.
  • Take good care of what type of bird or what species your pet belongs to so that you can find all the necessary information to feed them optimally without getting tired of always receiving the same food.
  • Carnivores usually feed on other smaller animals, if your bird is in captivity and is of this species, you should keep in mind from time to time to put one in its cage so that it can feed, since they get used to hunting their own food.
  • Take care that the environment or cage where you keep them is completely clean and free of food waste so that they grow and reproduce efficiently and normally according to the food and the environment in which you have them.
  • Try to vary the menu between seeds, fruits, plants and leaves, vegetables and some legumes that they usually like a lot, which will give them the necessary fiber for their body, just like many species, birds need a balanced and healthy diet to survive.
  • Always keep the water clean and more so if you have many birds in the same cage, since they tend to drink a lot when the season is a bit warm and they dirty it with the food that remains in their beaks, in addition to this allowing them to always be hydrated.
  • Its reproduction is oviparous, the eggs being fertilized by the male and the female usually hatches them so that the young are born, so you must take into account and place a small nest where they can lay their eggs and have their young.
  • Their body covered with feathers provides them with all the necessary protection against cold or heat, although if you have them in a cage it is good that you put a protective blanket on them and do not leave them out in the open for other animals to bother them.
