Among the parakeets, these funny animals that manage to win the affection of the whole family with their playful personality and their cheerful song, we can distinguish a wide range of varieties. Mainly, we can differentiate them by their color, we find two main lines: blue and green. In addition to the color lines, we can say that according to the factors of darkness, the color tone of our parakeet will be one or the other.

Its name is common parakeet, although we can also find it as an Australian parrot or Australian parakeet. It is one of the most common pets (just after dogs and cats), although it is indigenous to Australia, it has been introduced to many other regions due to great demand.

Instructions for a blue parakeet

When we are going to acquire a parakeet for the first time, we must take into account various factors:

  1. Health: We must make sure that it is healthy, if its feathers are smooth and we do not see any gaps between its plumages, it will be evidence that it is healthy. In addition, it should be able to make small flights inside the cage and it will not be easy for us to catch it the first few times. In addition, its plumage must be clean, especially in the areas near the anus or other holes or delicate areas such as the beak or the eyes. Finally, we will look at its beak, making sure that it does not have cries in it.
  2. Feeding: The feeding of these animals is based mainly on canary seed and millet, but our parakeets should have every day : fresh water, grain cereals, green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, fruit and vegetables and, a couple of times per week, we can put a sprig of millet. Plants with roots will help them in their digestion. We should not provide them with all the food at the same time; we can give it twice, for example in the morning and mid-afternoon.
  3. Care: We must clean both the feeders and drinkers every day or almost every day, since they are a potential source of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The rest of the components of the cage should be cleaned with boiling water once a week for the same reason. We will change the sand depending on what is stained, but preferably at least once a week. They need to fly, so we must let them roam freely at home for at least 2 hours. Especially when it is very hot, they need to bathe so we can give them a bath with a little water from time to time.

What do you need for a blue parakeet?

  • The measurements of the cage will depend on the number of parakeets we have, some approximate measurements for two parakeets would be: 70 centimeters long, 40 centimeters high and 50 centimeters wide.
  • We will ensure that the bars of the cage are arranged horizontally and trying, as much as possible, that they are not covered with any type of plastic.
  •  Inside the cage we must place: several stick so that they can walk and also exercise the muscles of their legs, a drinker, a feeder and also, a stone so that they can sharpen their little beaks.
  • We can also put all kinds of objects or toys intended for these animals (swings, ladders) or household products that we can give them another use (ice cream sticks, palm leaves) so that our pets can enjoy their little house.
  •  The floor of our cage should be covered by a couple of centimeters of specific sand for our parakeets.
  • If possible, we should place the cage in a high place, since these pets are afraid that something may attack them from above.

Tips for a blue parakeet
