For decades, the study of animal behavior was framed by a singular, rigid narrative: nature is "red in tooth and claw," a brutal hierarchy defined by aggression, male dominance, and the survival of the strongest. This worldview, deeply embedded in primatology and evolutionary biology, dictated how we interpreted everything from primates in the wild to the family dog in our living rooms.
However, during Women’s History Month, it is essential to look back at the radical intellectual shift that dismantled these myths. While the public is familiar with the "Trimates"—Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas—whose field work changed our relationship with our closest evolutionary relatives, two other scientists, Dr. Jeanne Altmann and Dr. Shirley Strum, fundamentally rewired our understanding of social structure. By shifting the focus from dominance to cooperation, they didn’t just change primatology; they changed the way we view the social fabric of the natural world.
